Contents: 1. Rear Bench Modification.
To obtain access to the rear bench locker required on many occasions, lying flat on the floor and reaching in full arms length to retrieve items.
I eventually came up with this modification without loosing the strength of the bed base. I disassembled the fixed struts and fit a hinge on the assembly. This allowed the base to lift up for access to the lockers underneath.
Although not perfect, the base plate when lifted does catch on the off side cushion! which can be moved aside. This is a small penalty to pay for the convenience of access. [Aug. 2003] I now place a plywood panel against the cushion to allow the locker to drop freely.
One added convenience, it is now possible to lift the frame when pulling out, and making up the bed. Before it was always a worry, as the centre support caught the floor mat, and whether it would be ripped from the bed base.
I am considering a locking device to ensure the bench does not spring open during an accident. It has proved to be quite stable during emergency stops.
Below I have tried to give some indication how I did this modification. This can easily be returned to it's original state if required by a new owner.
