1. Charging Relays in the engine bay

Charging Relays in the engine bay

It got me thinking, I always needed to ensure the mains charger was on during any stay at a camping site. I had decided the leisure battery was faulty.

It was while carrying out some engine battery maintenance, that I noticed the contacts to the cables of the charging relays were protruding from the relay container.

Checking these cables I found the relays, while being pushed into their holders, had pushed the cable contacts out of their holders. This in turn meant the relays were not getting the charge voltage to the leisure battery.

Cure: Hold the relay with one hand, and with a pliers in the other, push the contacts into the relay holder.

A recent trip to France proved we could go three days without the charger on, thereby ensuring we did not trip the camp site electrics when using other electric devices.

Since this incident I have fitted a Volt meter on the dash to indicate charging volts.
